Shane grew up on Whidbey Island and attended Western Washington University, where he played on the men’s soccer team. After WWU, he went to the Gonzaga University School of Law.
Shane started his career as a criminal prosecutor and spent 15 years working for the City of Bellingham. He began his career with the City as the lead prosecutor. For the remaining ten plus years, he served as the primary litigator for the City of Bellingham. In this role he was responsible for every step of the claim process, including handling claims pre-suit and representing the City in all stages of litigation. Shane has handled a variety of municipal defense suits, including civil rights, premises liability, discrimination, and negligence claims. He has appeared in various courts and administrative proceedings, including district court, superior court, the Washington State Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Washington State Supreme Court.
Shane also served as the City of Bellingham Risk Manager and advised all City departments on risk and liability. He was also the police legal advisor for the Bellingham Police Department. In this role he advised the many divisions of the police department, from patrol officers to the chief of police, on liability and policy issues.
In his free time, Shane enjoys exercising, playing golf, and hanging out with his wife, two daughters, and dog, George.
